This is an ongoing project where I write about my twenty-five1 favourite singles year after year. I’m starting in 1963, when The Beatles exploded and modern pop music was revolutionised and I’m ending in 1989, when I turned 18.
I’m writing about singles and the sheer joy of a song. I am an albums man, but there’s something special about singles. How a single slice of music by a band can be so joyous, so powerful and so important. Perhaps, with the rise of streaming, the single song is more important than it has been for many years.
