Watching Elvis in Newcastle
On 9th January 1995 I sat down in front of the TV set, on my own in a small flat in Newcastle and stuck BBC One on. This being the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s (and David Bowie’s) birthday the schedule was designed to reflect the date. The show was called “Elvis: Your Choice” and appeared to be the result of a radio vote The shows had been nominated: Follow That Dream, the 1962 film with Elvis in Florida, Viva Las Vegas from 1964, with the great “Come on Everybody” and the NBC TV special known to most people as the 68 Comeback Special. The winner was the Comeback Special, which in this pre-internet period was the holy grail of Elvis to me. A show I had heard about but never seen.
