I think it’s easy to take The Beatles for granted. Many music fans love them, but they’re always there, so we look for other things, listen to new music and new discoveries. Everyone who likes The Beatles had to discover them for the first time at some point, but after a while the music is internalised, omnipresent, and we think we should listen to other stuff. And so we do.
Every now and then I go back to the band, most recently during a quest to get all the original singles on 7”. It made it clear to me just how much I love the band, just how stunning they were, and how much they changed over their lifetime, both as a band, and how they changed pop music itself.
I don’t care what anyone else thinks: they were the greatest band that ever existed.
